Pilgrims traditionally take a dip in the Agni Theertham (sea) first, then bathe with water from all 22 wells.

The water in each well tastes different (sweet, salty, iron-rich, etc.), even though they are located close to each other.
The bathing ritual is symbolic of cleansing before darshan of Lord Ramanathaswamy (Shiva).
