మహాలయ అమావాస్య..కర్ణుడు భూలోకంలో గడిపి తిరిగి స్వర్గానికెళ్లిన ఈ పక్షం రోజులకే “ మహాలయపక్షము లేదా పితృ పక్షములు అని పేరు వచ్చింది.

*మహాలయ అమావాస్య.....*

దానశీలిగా పేరుపొందిన కర్ణుడికి మరణానంతరం స్వర్గలోకం ప్రాప్తించింది. ఆయన స్వర్గలోకానికి వెళుతుండగా మార్గ మధ్యంలో ఆకలి -  దప్పిక కలుగుతాయి. ఇంతలో ఒక ఫలవృక్షం కనిపించింది. పండు కోసుకుని తిందామని దాన్ని తాకడంతోనే ఆశ్చర్యంగా ఆ పండు  బంగారపు ముద్దగా మారిపోయింది.
ఆ చెట్టుకున్న పండ్లే కాదు మిగతా ఏ చెట్టు పండ్లు కోయబోయినా అదే అనుభవం ఎదురైంది.

ఇలా లాభం లేదనుకుని కనీసం దప్పిక యినా తీర్చుకుందామనుకుని సెలయేటిని సమీపించి దోసిట్లోకి నీటిని తీసుకుని నోటి ముందుంచుకున్నాడు. ఆ నీరు కూడా బంగారపు నీరుగా మారి పోయింది. ఆ తరువాత
స్వర్గలోకానికెళ్లాక అక్కడ కూడా అదే పరిస్థితి ఎదురైంది. దాంతో కర్ణుడు తాను చేసిన తప్పిదమేమిటి తనకిలా ఎందుకు జరుగుతున్నదని వాపోతుండగా ఆకాశవాణి ఇలా పలికింది..

''కర్ణా ! నీవు దానశీలిగా పేరు పొందావు. చేతికి ఎముక లేకుండా దానాలు చేశావు అయితే ఆ దానాలన్నీ బంగారం, వెండి, డబ్బు రూపేణా చేశావు గానీ కనీసం ఒక్కరికి కూడా అన్నం పెట్టి ఆకలి తీర్చలేదు. అందుకే నీకీ దుస్థితి ప్రాప్తించింది " అని చెప్పగానే కర్ణుడు తన తండ్రి అయిన సూర్యదేవుని వద్దకెళ్లి పరిపరివిధాల ప్రాధేయపడగా ఆయన కోరిక మేరకు ఇంద్రుడు కర్ణునికి ఒక అపురూపమైన అవకాశమిచ్చాడు. నీవు వెంటనే భూలోకానికెళ్లి అక్కడ అన్నార్తులందరికీ అన్నం పెట్టి మాతా పితరులకు తర్పణాదులు వదిలి తిరిగి రమ్మన్నాడు.

ఆ సూచన మేరకు కర్ణుడు భాద్రపద బహుళ పాడ్యమినాడు భూలోకానికి చేరాడు. అక్కడ పేదలు , బంధుమిత్రులు అందరికీ అన్నసంతర్పణ చేశాడు. పితరులకు తర్పణములు వదిలాడు. తిరిగి అమావాస్య నాడు స్వర్గానికెళ్లాడు.

ఎప్పుడైతే కర్ణుడు అన్న సంతర్పణలు, పితృతర్పణలు చేశాడో అప్పుడే ఆయనకు కడుపు నిండి పోయింది, ఆకలి తీరింది. కర్ణుడు భూలోకంలో గడిపి తిరిగి స్వర్గానికెళ్లిన ఈ పక్షం రోజులకే “ మహాలయపక్షము లేదా పితృ పక్షములు అని పేరు వచ్చింది. ఈ మహాలయ పక్షములో చివరి రోజే మహాలయ అమావాస్యగా పిలుస్తారు.

మౌనవ్రతం వలన కలిగేలాభాలు!
మనిషి మాయలో బ్రతుకుతుంటాడు. మానవ జీవితం అంతా తమస్సు, రజస్సు, సత్వ గుణాలతో నడుస్తుంది. వీటి ప్రభావంతో ఏర్పడే కామ, క్రోథ, లోభ, మోహ, మద, మత్సరాలనే అరిషడ్వర్గాలు, మనిషి జీవిత గమనాన్ని అడ్డుకుంటుంటాయి. కోరికలు పెరగడం, అది తీరకపోతే కోపాన్ని పెంచుకోవడం, ఉన్నదానితో సంతృప్తి చెందకుండా ఇంకా ఏవోవో కావాలని ఆశ పడటం, అన్నీ ఉన్నాయనే గర్వం..ఇలా మనిషి జీవితమంతా ఈ ఆరు గుణాల చుట్టూనే తిరుగుతుంటుంది. మానవ వాక్కు చేత ఇవన్నీ ప్రభావితమౌతాయి.

వాక్కు అదుపులో ఉన్న మనిషికి సర్వగుణాలు చేతిలో ఉంటాయి. కోరికల గుర్రాల్ని అదుపు చేయగల శక్తి అలాంటి వారికి లభిస్తుంది. మాట్లాడకుండా, మనసులోని భావాన్ని మాటల ద్వారా వ్యక్తీకరించకుండా ఉండటం మనిషికి చాలా కష్టం. సాధన మీదే అది సాధ్యపడుతుంది. అరిషడ్వర్గాలను జయించే ప్రయత్నంలో తపస్సు చేసుకునే మునీశ్వరులు మౌనం పాటించేది ఈ కారణం వల్లనే. మౌనంగా ఉండే కారణంగానే వాళ్లను మునులు అంటారు.

మనిషి మౌనంగా ఉంటే ఎన్నో సమస్యల్ని నివారించవచ్చు. మరెన్నో సమస్యల్ని అధిగమించవచ్చు. చేసే పనిపై ఏకాగ్రతను పెంచుకోవచ్చు. నేటికీ చాలా మంది భక్తి పరులు, వారం చేస్తున్నప్పుడు మౌనవ్రతాన్ని అవలంబిస్తుంటారు. ఆరోగ్యపరంగా, మానసిక ప్రశాంతత పరంగా ఎంతో మేలు చేస్తుంది మౌనవ్రతం. ఆధ్యాత్మికంగా ఈ వ్రతంతో చేసేవారి వాక్కుకు శక్తి పెరుగుతుంది. అబద్ధాలు ఆడాల్సిన అవసరం లేని కారణంగా వాక్శుద్ధి అవుతుంది.

ఎంత కోపం వచ్చినా, మౌనవ్రతంలో ఉన్న కారణంగా ఎదుటివారిని తిట్టకుండా తమను తాము నిగ్రహించుకుంటారు. తద్వారా మానవ జీవితంలో ప్రధాన శత్రువైన కోపాన్ని అధిగమించినట్టే. తుపాకీ గుండు కంటే మాట్లాడే మాట చాలా శక్తి కలిగినది. మౌనవ్రతం కారణంగా అనవసర వ్యాగ్యుద్ధాలు, అశాంతి ఉండవు. ప్రపంచమంతా నిశ్చలంగా కనిపిస్తుంది. మాట విలువు తెలిసిన వాళ్లు, దాన్ని తక్కువగా వాడటానికి ఎక్కువ ఇష్టపడతారు. మనల్ని మనం సైలెంట్ గా ఉంచుకోవడం ద్వారా అవతలి వారు చెప్పేది వినడానికి ఎక్కువ ఆస్కారం ఉంటుంది.

వాక్శుద్ధి అనేది చాలా పవిత్రమైంది. నోటివెంట తప్పుడు కూతలు రాని వాళ్లకు, ఎప్పుడూ మంత్రసాధన చేసేవారికి ఈ వాక్శుద్ధి ఉంటుంది. అలాగే ఎక్కువ మౌనాన్ని ఆశ్రయించే వారికి కూడా వాక్శుద్ధి మెండుగా ఉంటుంది. ఈ సిద్ధి ఉన్నవాళ్లు అన్నది వెంటనే జరిగిపోతుంటుంది. మంచి అయినా చెడు అయినా, వీరు అనగానే ఇట్టే ఫలితం కళ్లముందు కనిపిస్తుంది. మాటను పొదుపుగా వాడితే, లాభమే తప్ప నష్టం లేదు. మనకు తెలియకుండానే రోజూ మాట్లాడుతూ, నోటికి చాలా పనికల్పిస్తుంటాం. ఎప్పుడూ పనిచేస్తూ ఉంటే మన శరీర భాగాలకు కాస్త రెస్ట్ ఇవ్వడం కోసమే, పూర్వీకుల ఇలాంటి వ్రతాల్ని కనిపెట్టారు. పరిమితమైన ఉపవాసం పొట్టకు మంచింది. పరిమితమైన వాక్కు మొత్తం శరీరానికి మంచిది.

వారంలో కేవలం ఒక్కరోజు మౌనవ్రతం చేస్తే పోయేదేమీ ఉండదు. మనలోని వాక్శక్తి ఆదా అవడంతో పాటు, అనవరపు తగాదాల్ని అడ్డుకునే ఈ  మౌనవ్రతం, మనిషికి చాలా అవసరం. వివాదాలకు హద్దులేని నేటి సమాజంలో అత్యవసరం.

_Mental invocation is better than oral _

Devotee: When I invoke the Divine Name for an hour or more I fall into a state like sleep. On waking up I recollect that my invocation has been interrupted, so I try again.

Bhagavan: ‘Like sleep’, that is right. It is the natural state. Because you now identify yourself with the ego, you look upon the natural state as something which interrupts your work. So you must have the experience repeated until you realise that it is your natural state. You will then find that the invocation is extraneous, but still it will go on automatically. Your present doubt is due to false identification of yourself with the mind that makes the invocation. Invocation really means ‘clinging to one thought to the exclusion of all others’. That is the purpose of it. It leads to absorption which ends in Self-realisation or Jnana.

D: How should I practise invocation?

B: One should not use the name of God mechanically and superficially without a feeling of devotion. When one uses the name of God one should call on Him with yearning and unreservedly surrender oneself to Him. Only after such surrender is the name of God constantly with you.

D: Isn’t mental invocation better than oral?

B: Oral incantation consists of sounds. The sounds arise from thoughts, for one must think before one expresses one’s thoughts in words. The thoughts form the mind. Therefore mental invocation is better than oral.

D: Shouldn’t we contemplate the invocation and repeat it orally also?

B: When the invocation becomes mental, where is the need for sound? On becoming mental, it becomes contemplation. Meditation, contemplation and mental invocation are the same. When thoughts cease to be promiscuous and one thought persists to the exclusion of all others, it is said to be contemplation. The object of invocation or meditation is to exclude varied thoughts and confine oneself to one thought. Then that thought too vanishes into its source, which is pure Consciousness or the Self. The mind first engages in invocation and then sinks into its own source.
This is certain: worship, incantations and meditation are performed respectively with the body, the voice and the mind and in this they are of ascending order of value. One can regard this eight-fold universe as a manifestation of God; and whatever worship is performed in it is excellent as worship of God.

The repetition aloud of His name is better than praise. Better still is its faint murmur. But the best is repetition with the mind – and that is meditation, above referred to.

Better than such broken thoughts (meditation) is its steady and continuous flow like the flow of oil or of a perennial stream.

సత్త్వం సత్త్వవతామహమ్ || 

తా:- వంచక వ్యాపారములలో నేను జూదమును అయియున్నాను. మఱియు నేను తేజోవంతులయొక్క తేజస్సును (ప్రభావమును), (జయించువారలయొక్క) జయమును, (ప్రయత్నశీలురయొక్క) ప్రయత్నమును , (సాత్వికులయొక్క) సత్త్వగుణమును అయియున్నాను. 

వ్యాఖ్య:- ప్రపంచములోగల సమస్తపదార్థములందును, మంచివానియందుగాని, చెడ్డవానియందుగాని, భగవానుని అస్తిత్వము కలదు. వారి సాన్నిధ్యమే ప్రపంచములోని సమస్తపదార్థములకు, క్రియలకు శక్తిని ప్రసాదించుచున్నది. ఈ సత్యమును నిరూపించుటకు భగవాను డీ విభూతియోగమున కొందఱు దేవతలను, దానవులను, జంతువులను, జడపదార్థములను, కొన్ని క్రియలనుగూడ పేర్కొనెను. సంక్షేపించి చెప్పుటవలన ఒక్కొక్క తరగతికి ఒక్కొక్కటి చెప్పుకొనుచుపోయిరి. ఏ వస్తువును జూచినను, ఏ క్రియను పరికించినను అచ్చోట సాక్షాత్ భగవానునియొక్క అస్తిత్వమును భావనచేయవలెను. ఈ ఉద్దేశ్యముచేతనే జూదవిషయ మిచట ప్రస్తావింపబడినది కాని, దానిని ప్రోత్సహించవలెననిగాని, అనుసరించవలెననిగాని, అది ఉపాదేయమనిగాని అభిప్రాయము గాదు. ‘నేను మృగములలో సింహమును’ అని చెప్పినంతమాత్రమున సింహముతో ఆటలాడుకొనుమని అర్థముకాదుగదా! అట్లే ఈ జూదవిషయమున్ను  - అని గ్రహించుకొనవలయును. 
      ‘వ్యవసాయము’ అనగా ప్రయత్నము  తానని భగవానుడే పేర్కొనుటవలన మోక్షవిషయమున ప్రయత్నరహితులుగ, సోమరులుగనుండక సత్ప్రయత్నమాచరించుచుండుట శ్రేయస్కరమని తేలుచున్నది. ఎచట తేజము (ఉత్సాహము , ధైర్యము మున్నగునవి) ఉండునో, ఎచట దయయుండునో, ఎచట సత్ప్రయత్నముండునో, ఎచట సత్త్వగుణముండునో అచట తానుండునని భగవానుడు పలికిరి. కావున ఆ యా సద్గుణములను చక్కగ అలవఱచుకొనవలెను.

Man walks with two legs: iha and para (this world and the other), dharma and Brahman, righteousness and God! If one is totally engrossed in this world, the person is choosing to travel all through one’s life with a handicap, hopping on one leg. That is fraught with trouble; the person may fall any moment and break the shin. And one does! Goodness in this world and Godliness for the life after death - equal attention needs to be given to both. One must be vigilant while taking a step, whichever foot it may be. Both are essential for a happy journey through life. You have to put the right foot, the Brahman step, when you enter the region of realisation. By then the senses have to be conquered. Go means senses and Go-pi means a person who has subdued the senses, as a result of surrender to Go-pala, the master of the senses. Krishna once told Arjuna that he can enter Vrajamandala (the region where the Gopis lived), only after mastering his emotions and impulses, and his tendency to yield to the senses. Skanda Sashti, also known as Kanda Sashti, is the most important festival dedicated to Lord Murugan. Skanda Sashti is observed mainly by Tamil Hindus. 

The day of Skanda Sashti is decided based on lunar month and it falls during sixth day of Karthika Masam.

During Kanda Sashti, devotees observe six days fasting which starts from first day or Pirathamai of Karthika lunar month and ends on the sixth day which is known as Soorasamharam day. 

Soorasamharam is the final and the most important day of the six days festivities. 

It is believed that Lord Murugan defeated Demon Surapadman on the very same day and the festival of Soorasamharam is observed every year to mark the victory of good over evil.

It is important to note that the day when Shasti Tithi conjugates with Panjami Tithi is chosen for Soorasamharam Vratam. 

Hence most temples observe Kanda Sashti on Panjami Tithi if Shasti Tithi starts before sunset on Panjami Tithi.

Kanda Sashti celebrations at Thiruchendur Murugan Temple are the most famous one. 

The six days celebrations which start from Pirathamai of Karthika Masam culminate on Soorasamharam day. Thiru Kalyanam is observed on the next day of Soorasamharam.

Labh Panchami is known as Saubhagya Panchami and Labh Pancham in Gujarat. In some regions it is also known as Saubhagya-Labh Panchami. Saubhagya and Labh means good luck and benefit respectively. Hence this day is associated with benefit and good luck.

In Gujarat Diwali festivities culminate of the day of Labh Panchami and this day is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that Puja performed on the day of Labh Panchami brings benefit, comfort and good luck in the life, business and family of the worshipper.

In Gujarat most shop owners and businessmen restart their business activities on Labh Pancham after Diwali festivities. Hence in Gujarat, Labh Pancham is the first working day of Gujarati New Year. On this day businessmen inaugurate new account ledgers, known as Khatu in Gujarati, by writing Shubh on left, Labh on right and drawing a Sathiya in the center of the first page.

Yama Dwitiya is observed on Dwitiya Tithi during Kartik month. 

Most of the times, Yama Dwitiya falls two days after Diwali Puja. 

Yamraj, the lord of death, is worshipped on Yama Dwitiya along with Chitragupta and Yama-Doots, the subordinates of Lord Yamraj.

The Aparahna is the most suitable time for Yama Dwitiya Puja. 

Yamuna Snan is suggested in the morning before Yamraj Puja during Aparahna. 

Arghya should be given to Lord Yama after Puja.

Apart from Yama Puja, the day is more popularly known as Bhai Dooj. 

As per Yama Dwitiya legends, Goddess Yamuna fed her brother Yamraj on Kartik Dwitiya at her own home. 

Since then this day is known as Yama Dwitiya.

Skanda Sashti, also known as Kanda Sashti, is the most important festival dedicated to Lord Murugan. Skanda Sashti is observed mainly by Tamil Hindus. 

The day of Skanda Sashti is decided based on lunar month and it falls during sixth day of Karthika Masam.

During Kanda Sashti, devotees observe six days fasting which starts from first day or Pirathamai of Karthika lunar month and ends on the sixth day which is known as Soorasamharam day. 

Soorasamharam is the final and the most important day of the six days festivities. 

It is believed that Lord Murugan defeated Demon Surapadman on the very same day and the festival of Soorasamharam is observed every year to mark the victory of good over evil.

It is important to note that the day when Shasti Tithi conjugates with Panjami Tithi is chosen for Soorasamharam Vratam. 

Hence most temples observe Kanda Sashti on Panjami Tithi if Shasti Tithi starts before sunset on Panjami Tithi.

Kanda Sashti celebrations at Thiruchendur Murugan Temple are the most famous one. 

The six days celebrations which start from Pirathamai of Karthika Masam culminate on Soorasamharam day. Thiru Kalyanam is observed on the next day of Soorasamharam.

Labh Panchami is known as Saubhagya Panchami and Labh Pancham in Gujarat. In some regions it is also known as Saubhagya-Labh Panchami. Saubhagya and Labh means good luck and benefit respectively. Hence this day is associated with benefit and good luck.

In Gujarat Diwali festivities culminate of the day of Labh Panchami and this day is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that Puja performed on the day of Labh Panchami brings benefit, comfort and good luck in the life, business and family of the worshipper.

In Gujarat most shop owners and businessmen restart their business activities on Labh Pancham after Diwali festivities. Hence in Gujarat, Labh Pancham is the first working day of Gujarati New Year. On this day businessmen inaugurate new account ledgers, known as Khatu in Gujarati, by writing Shubh on left, Labh on right and drawing a Sathiya in the center of the first page.
